Girls Varsity Soccer · Ladies Soccer completes historic regular season

The ladies soccer program had the greatest season in program history last year but they clearly felt like that wasn’t good enough. This year they won more regular season games than any other season with 18 (previous record was 16). They scored more goals than ever before with an incredible 102 (previous record was 61). They gave up fewer goals than any other season yielding only 17 (previous record was 37). And most importantly, they defended their league championship.

They outscored league opponents 48-3 this year with the only 3 goals coming in the regular season finale against Rancho Mirage HS. Melanie Ramirez and the defense recorded an astounding 14 shutouts. The back line has been anchored by senior center backs Adrianna Moreno and Daniela Iniguez. Their experience and leadership was key in keeping the ball out of the danger areas.

The offense was the best in the Valley this year. The three headed attack of Brianda Rios-Felix (15 goals and 14 assists), Miranda Torres (18 goals & 10 assists), and Mariah Godinez (29 goals & 10 assists) paced the team and made it impossible for anyone to slow them down. The balance was key, according to Coach Francisco Morales, as teams could not dedicate extra defenders to any one part of the field. They were the top 3 scorers in the league by a wide margin.

One of the more impressive things about this team is how everyone has put aside their ego to accomplish something special as a team. They will graduate 13 seniors after this year and each one has been important to the success they have experienced. Marsha Zamudio has given the team good minutes in goal and has contributed to many of those shut outs. Jenny Salcido and Vivyanna Montreal have been key in defending and controlling the ball from the midfield. And Kady Gonzalez and Corely Garcia have helped slow down attackers as the right and left defenders.

The team is anticipating a good draw as a number 1 seed for the CIF playoffs. They should have a good chance to continue their run and out perform last year’s trip to the Quarterfinals.
