The athletic department is thrilled to announce the winners of the Scholar Athletes of the year and the Athletes of the year for the 2018 graduating class.

Scholar Athlete of the year

Audry Valencia and Jesus ‘Kino’ Gonzalez each carried a 4.0+ GPA through their 4 years of high school in addition to being exceptional athletes. Audry has been a key member of the history making girls soccer program scoring 7 goals for the Lady Arabs in her final season. She also has been one of the best jumpers for the Track & Field program and will go on to jump at Cal State San Marcos for Coach Steve Scott upon graduation. Kino is a 3 year varsity baseball player and earned 1st team all De Anza League honors as a junior and likely will receive the same recognition this year. He was one of the better hitters in the entire league and played strong defense in the middle infield. He also was the Rotary Tournament MVP last year. He will be continuing his baseball career at Pomona-Pitzer College.

Athlete of the year

Adrianna Moreno was one of the most important pieces for Francisco Morales and the girls soccer team over the last few years. She was moved around to fill holes and strengthen units until her senior season when she selflessly agreed to move to one of the Center Back positions and anchored perhaps the best defense in the entire Valley. She was also a key member of the Track program as one of the stronger runners. In addition to excelling on the field, she has worked hard in the classroom and has carried a high GPA. She has received several scholarship offers to play college soccer and will be making her decision soon.

Christian Brenes and Armando Denis both did more than enough to warrant the award of Male Athlete of the Year. It was such a difficult decision due to their accomplishments that we decided to honor them both. Armando’s accomplishments have been widely acknowledged as he led the explosive Mighty Arab offense on the football field to back to back playoff appearances and its first League Championship in several decades. He was also named the League Offensive MVP as a junior and a senior. Deniz also was a leader on the basketball team as a 2 year starter and all De Anza League player as a senior. He rounded out his senior year by running track and qualified for CIF as the league champ in the 300 M hurdles. You will be able to find Armando playing quarterback for the College of the Desert football team in the fall.

Brenes was considered by many to be the heart and soul of two of the stronger programs on campus. He played middle linebacker for the Arab football team and was a spectacular leader while leading the team in tackles. He was honored by being named to the De Anza League 1st team. He then went on to dominate on the wrestling mat and helped lead the talented team to a very successful season and a League Championship. He placed at CIF individuals and advanced to the Masters Tournament. Christian will be playing college football but is yet undecided on the school.

We are immensely proud of each of these athletes and their accomplishments. And excited to see what each of them will do in their college careers!
